Celebrating Steve’s Recovery and the Power of ‘Heart Health’

As Notts County prepare to face Newport County this afternoon, the fixture holds a profound significance for one life-long Magpies supporter.

During the reverse fixture on the opening day of the season away at Newport, Steve Silver suffered a severe cardiac event. Tomorrow, as we welcome Newport to Meadow Lane, we also want to pause and celebrate Steve’s incredible journey of recovery… a journey championed by the Notts County Foundation’s new ‘Heart Health’ programme.

Following a 12-week hospital rehabilitation course, Steve spotted a leaflet for the Foundation’s Heart Health pilot. Designed specifically to help adults across Nottinghamshire safely rebuild their cardiovascular fitness after a heart attack or similar event, the initiative offered Steve a structured path forward.

Since joining, Steve has fully embraced the weekly sessions, and his progress is something we are incredibly proud of.

“After you’ve done some exercise, it gives you a boost, it makes you feel good inside… it’s good for your mental health as well,” Steve shares. “I’m actually doing something I’m going to benefit from… helping myself to have a longer life.” – Steve Silver

Rebuilding physical strength after a cardiac event is a delicate process, which is why our Heart Health sessions at the Portland Centre are led by specialist cardiac phase IV professionals. Activities range from low-impact cycling to resistance and balance exercises, all tailored to each individual’s medical background.

More importantly, the environment is rooted in empathy and encouragement rather than pressure.

“It’s definitely not a bootcamp, so everything is at your own pace. You know your limits… and you do as much or as little as you want to do in our classes.

If you’re a nervous and new beginner to a gym-like environment, the staff are very helpful, friendly, and they’ll give you all the support you need.” – Lisa Welch, Deputy Health Manager at Notts County Foundation

The success of the Heart Health programme extends beyond the physical milestones. Recovery can be isolating, and the social connection fostered during these sessions is a huge lifeline.

We’ve seen first-hand how much exercise can support people recovering from illness… And while the physical benefits are clear, the social side is just as important. Working in a small group with like-minded people can have a powerful positive impact too.” – Alex Toplis, Health Manager at Notts County Foundation

Witnessing Steve reclaim his everyday fitness and self-belief captures why this initiative was created. His journey is a brilliant reminder of the life-changing community work happening right here at the Foundation.

The Heart Health programme takes place at the home of the Foundation at the Portland Centre. If you or a loved one are looking for a safe, supportive route back to fitness following a cardiac event, or just simply want to improve your cardiovascular fitness, we are here for you.
