On Saturday 21st March, at Notts County’s clash with Cheltenham Town, a young community hero stepped into the spotlight. Kayden, a dedicated participant in the Premier League Kicks programme, was recognised by Notts County Foundation as a “More Than Just a Game” Community Captain, receiving his award pitch side from first team player Lee Ndlovu in a proud and memorable moment.
Kayden’s journey began in 2024 at Portland Leisure Centre in the Meadows, an area that has limited safe and accessible recreational spaces, and reduced access to youth services, meaning opportunities for young people can be scarce.
For Kayden, it quickly became more than just a place to play.
“I enjoy attending Premier League Kicks because I get to play football with all my friends. If I didn’t attend Kicks, I would probably be at home playing on my PlayStation, as there aren’t many local parks where we can go and play football.” – Kayden
His words reflect the programme’s purpose offering connection, activity, and a sense of belonging in a community where those opportunities are often limited.
Kayden’s resilience stood out during a difficult period before Christmas, when he suffered a broken foot. Unable to play and reliant on a protective boot and crutches, he faced weeks on the side-lines.
But he never stopped showing up.
“When I was injured, I was jealous because I couldn’t play football. However, I still enjoyed attending the sessions as it meant I could support my friends and my younger brother.” – Kayden
Rather than stepping away, Kayden embraced a new role. During tournaments, he became a team manager guiding his peers, offering feedback, and developing leadership skills.
His teammates recognised his value too, regularly seeking his input after matches. Even off the pitch, Kayden remained at the heart of the team.
Premier League Kicks, funded through the Premier League Foundation, engages young people aged 8–18 in high-need areas, not just by providing sport, but mentoring, personal development, and a positive pathway forward.
Kayden embodies everything the “More Than Just a Game” campaign stands for.
His commitment, even in through injury, shows how football can build resilience. His leadership highlights the importance of inclusion and his enthusiasm demonstrates the power of simply having a safe place to belong.
”Kayden is everything Premier League Kicks stands for. He’s a kind and caring individual who always puts others first, showing genuine support to his peers both on and off the pitch. Even when he was injured, his commitment never dropped he continued to show up, encourage others, and lead by example.
It’s hard to truly quantify the impact Kayden has on the group, but what’s clear is that he’s a real team player and a natural leader. He embodies the values of Premier League Kicks every single week and is a genuinely valued member of our community.” – Alysia Johnson, Sport and Inclusion Officer at Notts County Foundation
Community Captains like Kayden are the unsung heroes of the game young people who inspire others, lift those around them, and prove that football is about far more than what happens on the pitch.
Receiving his award at Meadow Lane was a fitting tribute to Kayden’s journey so far. But more importantly, it was a celebration of what he represents: determination, community spirit, and the life-changing impact of opportunity.
Kayden’s story is a reminder that football truly is more than just a game and for young people it can make all the difference.
